Abstract

The productivity of independent oil palm plantations in Muaro Sentajo Village remains low due to social constraints such as low education levels, advanced age, and weak norms of mutual cooperation. Social capital—including trust, participation in farmer groups, and information networks—is crucial to addressing these issues. This study aims to: (1) Describe the characteristics of oil palm farmers in Muaro Sentajo Village; and (2) Analyze the social capital possessed by oil palm farmers in the village. The research was conducted in Muaro Sentajo Village, Sentajo Raya Subdistrict, Kuantan Singingi Regency. The sampling method used was purposive sampling. The data utilized in this study include both primary and secondary data. The analytical method employed is descriptive analysis. The results show that: (1) The majority of farmers in Muaro Sentajo Village are within the productive age group and have at least a secondary level of education, which are important assets for openness to innovation and improving agricultural efficiency. Although most farmers earn between IDR 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 per month from farming and have moderate oil palm cultivation skills, a high number of family dependents and low social engagement present significant challenges. Therefore, training, agricultural extension, and the strengthening of social capital are necessary to sustainably enhance farmers' skills, productivity, and welfare; (2) The level of social capital among farmers in Muaro Sentajo Village is moderate, but remains weak in terms of shared vision, family involvement, and institutional relationships. Strengthening farmer groups, the role of families, and formal networks is essential to support the sustainability of farming enterprises.
